Peaceful Pines at Tahoe Donner

Food and Activity Recommendations
Places to Eat . . .
There are plenty of places to eat in the Truckee area, but here are a few of our favorites. Check the restaurant link to make sure they are open.

Children are welcome in all restaurants, but some places are just naturally more kid friendly. Having raised two boys, I know that a place needs to have three things for me to enjoy my meal. The restaurant needs to be fast, have a large selection of rather "plain" dishes, and it needs to loud. So, those establishments that meet all three of these criteria get my [Kids] endorsement. If it the place has two of my three criteria, I will list a Kid note.

We like these places a lot (in no order of preference):
  • An absolutely wonderful meal can be found at Stella, located at the Cedar House hotel. Delicious food, very romantic, small setting, and impeccable service. Please leave the young kids at home. Reservations are a must.
  • Comfortable fine dinning best describes Cottonwood. They have really good food, and a great view from the deck. You can take your time. Inside can be a touch loud and warm, but we still really like this place.
  • Pianeta Ristorante offers a good selection of Italian and mediterranean dishes.
  • El Toro Bravo is an institution. Great food. But they don't have a website. [Kids]
  • Bar of America offers fresh California cuisine.
  • Wild Cherries Coffee House open all day has wonderful wraps, bagels, sandwiches, and fresh coffee. Great place to get a box lunch for the days activity. [Kids]
  • If you like burgers, this is a must try. Burger Me! has serious burgers, and was featured on Food Network. [Kids]
  • The Lodge at Tahoe Donner has really good food, very small menu but inside Tahoe Donner. Kid note: not a lot plain dishes.
  • One of the best places in town for omelets is Squeeze Inn. Open for breakfast and lunch, featured on Food Network, is an experience. Great food. Kid note: good for kids once you get a table.
  • Z-Marketplace at Tahoe Donner has a wonderful sandwich counter. The portions are large, made to order, and fresh. It's a small market with most of the essentials. It will save you a trip to Safeway.
  • Moody's Bistro & Lounge, it's just different. Good food and music.
  • Trokay has both traditional and prix fixe menus. The food is excellent at this unique upscale establishment. We recommend the Chef's Tasting Menu to get the broadest selection of unique flavors. You won't be disappointed. The kids will hate this place.
  • Marg's World Taco Bistro should not be missed. Don't let the "Taco" throw you--there is nothing Mexican about this place. They offer flavors from all over the globe, served on a fresh, homemade flour tortilla (think more naan-like). There is something for everyone here. [Kids]
  • Truckee River Winery serves up some pretty good wine but it's the whole experience that makes this place fun. They have some delicious cheese pairings, along with a small menu with sandwiches and appetizers. Bring the kids (or not) and play some Bocce. [Kids]

That's all for now. I'll add some more comments after the holiday madness.

We like these places also (in no order of preference):
  • Jax at the Tracks featured on Food Network, they put a spin of traditional favorites.
  • If you are looking for traditional BBQ look at Smokey's Kitchen,. Good food, not great. Take the kids. Sharks game on TV.  [Kids]
  • More of a traditional pizzeria, the Village Pizzeria offers good food. Kid note: service can be slow.
  • For traditional Chinese in every respect go to Wong's Garden Restaurant. [Kids]
  • Zano's Family Italian is the place to take the kids--the place is always loud. Large portions. It can be long wait for a table. They have a great to go menu featuring family style dishes. [Kids]
  • Pizza on the Hill at Tahoe Donner, it's close, fast, and good. [Kids]
  • Marty's Cafe for breakfast or lunch. It is delicious. Be warned, the portions are very large. Do as your mother said--share. [Kids]

Not all restaurants are for us. We mention them here, but suggest it's best to check out the latest reviews:
  • FiftyFifty Brewing Company used to be one of our favorite places. It has slipped a bit recently. The beer is still quite good, but the food needs some improvement.
  • Best Pies Pizza, let's just say it's not the best. Located in old town, if you have kids in tow, like super thin crust and basic toppings, then stop in. [Kids]
